Joining the Greek system, if it is the right thing for you, will be nothing like the movies and on TV. For a lot of people, rush is right around the corner. The process of finding your place in it all can make you feel every emotion in the book, but then the dust will settle. You will be able to see these new people with one new place in common. You will have no idea at the time, but they will make your best memories for the next four year. It may not be after you open your bid day card, after a month, or even after pref day during rush, but here are some signs you are in the right sorority:
You can remember the last time you laughed
In the right place and surrounded by the right friends, it will be so easy for you to remember the last time you laughed. You will not be able to go a day without laughing. Sororities are not made of candy and filled with rainbows, so you will still have some bad days since you are still a person. On those days, the worst days, someone will be there to make you happy. It could just be for a second, but you will smile, laugh, and know exactly who you have to thank.
You get to go home whenever you want
College is hard. You will miss home cooked meals, hugs from your mom, your own bed, and some creature with four legs. You will get homesick. The craziest things about it all though, are the girls that tell you their sororities, “feel like home,” are telling you the truth. There is no way to explain it without quoting Taylor Swift or a Hallmark card. When you get that feeling, the one that feels warm and comfortable, you know you are in the right place. The right sorority gives you a whole other home, and it will feel just as good.
You will have no lies left on your resume
The friends, if they are anything like mine, are going to be crazy, beautiful, weird, smart, gross, hilarious, and irreplaceable. They make you want to be a better person. You will not want to be some mega version of yourself, but just better than you were yesterday. The girls in your sorority will do incredible things, and you will genuinely be happy for them. It is the weirdest thing. What is even weirder? They will celebrate you when the time comes. You will not be competitive or jealous. You will want to be the kind of friend these amazing people deserve.
You know who to call
When you get arrested, you know who will bail you out. When you get dumped, you know who will bring the wine. When you fail, you know who will help you do better next time. When you study all night, you know who will make a coffee run. When you have one too many vodka sodas, you know who will walk you home. When you have just the right number of vodka sodas, you know who will order a pizza at 2:00AM. When you need a break, you know who will sing every word of, “I Wanna Dance with Somebody.” When you watch Netflix, you know who will cuddle. When you get engaged, you will know who you want to stand up there beside you. When you get a promotion, you will know who will pop the champagne. When you want your best friend, you will not know who to call because you will not be able to decide from so many great people that love you.
